Oct 3, 8.00 AM: TRUTH ABOUT THE YOUTH
Gino Borromeo
McCann Worldgroup

In this keynote address, McCann VP, Gino Borromeo, poses a question that all educators must wrestle with: “Who are the students that we have been tasked to educate?" There’s a new generation on the horizon: Generation Z (aged 2-20). The members of this Snapchat-wielding generation is a species entirely distinct from the so-called Millennials. Some of the adjectives that have been used to describe them include  “independent,” “pragmatic,” and “self-educated.”

But what do the data tell us? Mr. Borromeo will share with us the provocative findings of a global research study undertaken  by McCann Truth Central called “The Truth about Youth.” Researchers conducted focus groups with over 500 young people between the ages of 15 and 28 in 29 countires, as well as interviews of over 33,000 people (11,000 between the ages of 16 and 30) in eighteen countries (including U.S., U.K., China, Brazil, India, Chile, Mexico, Japan, Spain, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, South Africa, the Philippines, Canada and Russia).

This keynote address promises to raise questions about our assumptions and begin a conversation about the people who matter the most in our work in education: our students.

Oct 4, 8.00 AM: INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION
FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY COHESION

Christine Halse, PhD Education University of Hong Kong

How can societies manage the dramatic global changes that are disrupting social stability around the world? These changes have fueled inter-ethnic, terrorist and separatist violence, displaced populations and increased poverty and social exclusion. Yet the factors contributing to these problems show few signs of easing: the increasing international movement of migrants, refugees and guest workers; unemployment from the globalization of business and labor; new geo-political power relations; and the global circulation through communications technology of values, ideas and cultural practices that both benefits and disrupt societies.

Under these conditions, strengthening national values and identity needs to be tempered by an inclusive, intercultural understanding of others. Based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and supported by influential international agencies such as UNESCO, interculturalism is reshaping the conduct of social and political relations from Europe to South America. One important, distinctive facet of interculturalism is its focus on the development of intercultural competencies in all areas of education and civic life. Drawing on ‘real life’ examples, I illustrate how these competencies can be nurtured in education and why they should be central for social cohesion and our collective futures.

REX Project-Based Learning Masterclass
with Andrew Miller INSTRUCTIONAL COACH, SHANGHAI AMERICAN SCHOOL

To be successful in an uncertain future, students need to have a deep understanding of the content and to develop success skills like the 4 Cs. Traditional classroom settings and approaches, even those in which students are given culminating "real-world" projects, may not achieve this. Project-based Learning holds great promise in this regard. Learn about the power of PBL and how to design a PBL unit in this exciting Master Class. Understand the difference between traditional projects and true student-centered Project-based Learning, and gain practical skills to be able to assess for student learning outcomes. Leave with a project idea to implement in the classroom.

Andrew Miller is currently an Instructional Coach at the Shanghai American School in China, coaching with an emphasis on Project-Based Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, and Assessment best practices.
